VISITOR QUESTIONAIRE AUTOMATIC COLLECTION SYSTEM using Digital Pens

NTT Comware Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuhji Imai; below, NTT Comware) will provide the Visitor Questionnaire Automatic Collection system which utilizes digital pens and the Digital Pen Gateway solution, as well as technical expertise, at Visualize – The history and the futurescape of visual media, a special exhibition being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Meguro-ku, Tokyo; Director: Yoshiharu Fukuhara) to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

[Overview of the Visitor Questionnaire Automatic Collection System]

The Visitor Questionnaire Automatic Collection System works in the following manner. When museum visitors use the digital pen to write their responses to questions or their opinions on specialized paper, their written comments are displayed on a monitor screen and collected as data at the same time. In addition to enabling exhibition sponsors to be able to determine visitor responses to the exhibition, this system eliminates time consuming work such as data entry and the document collection. This system will improve the manner in which questionnaires are saved and the efficiency of questionnaire management.

[About Digital Pen Gateway]

The Visitor Questionnaire Automatic Collection System utilizes the Digital Pen Gateway solution developed by NTT Comware. Under normal conditions, a single personal computer cannot be used to receive data from multiple digital pens. However, with Digital Pen Gateway, a single personal computer can be used to receive simultaneous data transmitted via Bluetooth (*1) from up to 16 Anoto (*2) pens. In addition, the hardware for Digital Pen Gateway contains the paperback-book sized ultra-small Linux server L-Box. (see attached INFORMATION SHEET for further details)

[Demonstrating the usage potential for digital pens in group creation activities]

It is anticipated that digital pens will be utilized for the management of accounting documents and also in the field of education. However, at this exhibition, not only will this system be utilized as an automatic questionnaire collection system for the gathering of visitorfs opinions and impressions regarding the exhibition itself, it will also play a important role by demonstrating the potential of this system for use in the field of media art and in group creation activities that make use of the Digital Pen Gateway, a solution which enables the simultaneous use of multiple digital pens.

*2 Anoto System:
An input user interface technology which utilizes a specialized paper (Anoto paper) and pen (digital pen) developed by the Swedish firm Anoto AB Corporation (http://www.anoto.com/). This technology allows users to transmit data such as memos and illustrations through pen and paper instead of traditional interfaces such as keyboards. Because markings made by the digital pen are converted into digital format, users can save handwritten images and convert text through character recognition.
