NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION to provide PROgART Linux total solution service
World's First Linux Total Solution
NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Taneaki Mihara) has announced that starting this June it will provide PROgART, the total enterprise solution configured on the Linux ( *1 ) open-source operating system, which is expected to rapidly spread into an increasing number of corporate systems. NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION is the first in the world to provide a Linux total solution in mission-critical fields.

By leveraging the experiences and achievements of NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION in the development of many of NTT's large-scale corporate backbone systems, NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION provides Linux business market services as a unified package named PROgART. It includes the following services that have been conventionally provided for UNIX system products: (1) consulting services, (2) system integration and outsourcing in mission-critical fields, (3) nation-wide maintenance and operation service, (4) Learning seminars, (5) product development and marketing solutions.
While the Linux open-source operating system has been available free-of-charge, when the system goes down, users have been required to either fix the system on their own, or wait for announcements of fixes by developers around the world as well as troubleshooting information from distributors. Typically, distributors and providers assume no responsibility for maintaining system integrity, due to the daily updating of source code. Thus, Linux-related business tends to be restricted to marketing, such as the marketing of only pre-installed hardware, universal support except application software and OS, and emphasis on seminars and tutorials. Users are concerned about insecure support systems and have come to expect a total level of support associated with products such as commercial UNIX and Windows NT, from system installation and operation to maintenance, tutorials and other user friendly services.
Based on its expertise and technologies from previous UNIX-based system development for many vendors, NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION can quickly provide products with correct processing for defective kernels ( *2 ), the core of the OS, and can provide modified source code to Linux developers (the Linux community).
Services providing a stable Linux-optimized hardware environment for more reliable performance and adequate kernel support will be only available in collaboration with partner companies: VALinux Systems Japan (tentative name, a joint venture of VA Linux Systems, Inc. and Sumitomo Corporation, to be launched this June), POLYSERVE Inc. (Head Offce: California, U.S.), and Yokogawa Engineering Service Corporation (Head Office: Tachikawa, Tokyo, President: Sumihiko Akaishizawa). NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION will deploy marketing channels with the following partners: POLYSERVE, Inc., NEC Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Koji Nishigaki), and Yokogawa Rental & Lease Corporation (Head Office: Musashinoshi, Tokyo, CEO: Hitoshi Inomata).
