Realizing a highly-functional information service platform for next-generation mobile communications
Platform expected to conform to global standards by integrating Mobile Agent and E-speak.

NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION
Hewlett-Packard Japan, Ltd.

NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Taneaki Mihara) and Hewlett-Packard Japan, Ltd. (HP Japan, Headquarters: Suginami-ku, Tokyo, President: Masao Terazawa) have introduced to the market a new platform supported by a highly functional infrastructure for next generation mobile communications by integrating Mobile Agent, developed by NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION, and E-speak ( *1 ), developed by Hewlett-Packard Company (HP, Headquarters: California, U.S. CEO: Carleton (Carly) Fiorina). NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION in collaboration with HP Japan will actively explore the potentials of this platform for mobile communications.

Pervasive mobile terminals in the expanding Internet-based market require advanced, diversified services. The availability of mobile Internet terminals has triggered the inception of IMT200 service, a highly functional car navigation service based on ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems).

Based on this platform, a network agent autonomously selects optimal services from potential providers and systematically integrates the selected services to correspond with mobile user requests. Currently, users must directly access service providers and follow the individual procedures of each provider to locate services which meet their needs.

The platform represents an ideal infrastructure for integrated functions. NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION developed the agent ( *2 ) which coordinates the individual systems of Internet service providers, the mobile agent for executing programs on terminals moving between Internet-based machines, the distribution transaction method for distributing user requests to two or more service providers, and E-speak, which provides the distribution service, management and monitoring of the systems.

NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION and HP Japan intend to acceralate business development in the field of highly-functional next-generation mobile networking, empowered by back-end systems. It will be realized by a higher-level technology (which supports the design of mobile terminal implementation) using advanced processing techniques that are created through NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION's own extensive experience in large-scale distribution processing related to system integration and network computing in communications. These techniques will be brought together with the HP embedded Java Chai ( *3 ) and E-speak technologies.

NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION will actively promote the platform to mobile network and terminal providers as the gateway into the Internet business market.

Platform Technical Features

NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION
Mobile Agent
· Complies with asynchronous communication standards (mobile communication specifications).
· Logical connection of independent ASPs
· Distribution transactions
· Guaranteed security (authorization and permissions)

HP
E-speak
· Centralized control of distributed service
· Distributed system monitoring service
· Access control to distributed resources
· Distributed communication protocol for business to business (BtoB) transactions

Platform Concept

· Provides system infrastructure connecting and controlling service providers over the Internet.
· Generates an innovative environment for providing services, in which users are recognized as information providers, and are logically connected to the ASP.
· Based on Java, providing an autonomous, highly durable service provision environment independent of the various existing environments.

Potential Application Services

Automobile Accidents

Based on information from automobile-embedded sensors which detect accidents or break-ins, one or more of the following are automatically contacted by the system and provided with necessary information, such as location:

· Police stations (110)
· Fire stations and ambulances (119)
· Hospitals
· Insurance companies
· Road service providers

The system also informs drivers passing the accident site of official responses to the situation (such as the anticipated time of arrival by police or emergency support) through car navigation systems. An owner authorization function reports the accident to the vehicle owner's mobile phone if he or she is not present.

Planning of Overseas Business Travel

The following services are provided to support overseas business travel:

· Airline reservations
· Hotel reservations
· Rental care reservations
· Sight-seeing information and weather reports

The desired information can be requested from mobile terminals, with options and confirmed reservations returned to the terminals. Services similar to a travel agency can be performed, including changes in plans.

* Application services like these will be exhibited and demonstrated at JavaOne 2000, an international Java exhibition held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, U.S., June 6-9, 2000

Glossary

*1 E-Speak
E-Speak is open-source software enabling access to multiple services on the Internet.
Features:
1. Combines optimal services on the Internet, creating an innovative service package.
2. Multiple service properties can be changed at one time according to user requests.
3. Incorporates management functions, including service registration.
4. Monitors system status.

*2 Agent
An agent performs autonomous decision-making according to specific situations, and provides enhanced services to coordinate and integrate various services of a distributed agent on the Internet.

*3 Chai
Chai is a software technology for Java-based embedded devices. Service providers offer application implementation services coordinated with service changes and upgrades (provided so far by hardware suppliers), along with the installation of applications by various individual methods. This is useful for mobile information devices, telecommunication office machines, factory automization devices and various other applications.
