Fujitsu, Lucent, and NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION announce joint proposal for prototype of next-generation NTT DoCoMo system

Fujitsu Ltd. (Fujitsu, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Naoyuki Akikusa), Lucent Technologies Japan, Ltd. (Lucent, Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Eiichi Shimizu), and NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) announced a joint proposal for a prototype of a next-generation IP core network system for NTT DoCoMo mobile communication. The companies are system suppliers selected by NTT DoCoMo.

NTT DoCoMo has selected the proposed system for evaluation tests to begin in the fourth quarter of 2000, and will determine the feasibility of an all-IP core network system on a mobile network. This evaluation test is part of NTT DoCoMo's challenge toward the next-generation broadband network corresponding with demands for various Internet and multimedia services.

Joint development of the prototype system is the first project to be undertaken through a strategic partnership contract signed in June between Fujitsu and Lucent for a next-generation network concept. The system to be collaboratively developed by the two leading enterprises is regarded as a core infrastructure. This project results from the collaborative partnership on SoftSwitch between Lucent and NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION announced last October at Telecom 99 in Geneva, Switzerland.

This system is composed of network components provided by Fujitsu and Lucent. Specifically, Fujitsu will provide its EA1000 IP Router Platform for IP core networking and mobile IP platform, supporting speech and video mobile communication controlled by IP technology. Lucent will provide a call agent platform generated from Lucent's SoftSwitch technology and its APX 8000 Multi-service Access Switch. In addition, NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION will provide service applications on those platforms.

Comment by Hiroaki Takeichi, Director of Fujitsu Ltd.

"Fujitsu has been very active in this field for a long time in collaboration with Fujitsu Laboratories, Ltd. As a result of its extensive experience in cooperation with Lucent and NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION, Fujitsu will make every effort to generate groundbreaking results, based on tests of NTT DoCoMo's next-generation all-IP mobile communication."

Comment by Eiichi Shimizu, Representative Director of Lucent Technologies Japan, Ltd.

"Lucent Technologies is honored to be selected as a system supplier for NTT DoCoMo's next-generation mobile communication network. We are willing to play an important role in system development by fully applying our experience in mobile communications and inter-networking."
