Smart Pit provides payment services to online shops and Internet virtual malls accessible from convenience stores using dedicated pre-issued cards without requiring an invoice. Customers gain increased security, since the dedicated cards only record order and payment information with no bank account or credit card identification, thereby preventing illegal card usage or distribution of personally identifiable information. Online merchants benefit from reduced costs for printing, handling and mailing invoices and receipts.
Convenience stores other than the five e-plat partners who are also considering the service include Daily Yamazaki (Head Office: Ichikawa-shi, Chiba-ken), am/pm Japan (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), Kyushu Convenience Systems (Every-One, SPAR, RIC Mart, Head Office: Kumamoto-shi, Kumamoto-ken), Seico Mart (Head Office: Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido), Saveon (Head Office: Isezaki-shi, Gunma-ken), Community Store (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), and Coco Store (Head Office: Nagoya-shi, Aichi-ken).
Nearly 50 online shops have shown interest, including Internet book merchant Rakuten Books, Internet service provider So-net, and Internet co-operative Corpnext.
NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION projects Smart Pit business revenues to reach ¥4 billion by the end of fiscal year 2004. NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION is also approaching public agencies to explore licensing the system to handle the payment of public utilities fees, such as electric power, gas, and telephone.
