NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE Corporation to release Linux-based software clusters; applicable for a variety of systems, including SOHO backbone systems
NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION, (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) will release a family of software clusters ( *1 ) products based on the Linux open-source operating system on November 1, 2000.

Linux sales have captured interest in the server OS market, with market share increasing as high as 30% in the U.S. server OS markets, shadowing the growth of the Internet. According to the IT research company International Data Corporation Japan (IDC Japan), the Linux market share has increased to nearly 8% in Japan this year compared to only 3% in 1999. Linux is increasingly being offered to ISP/ASP enterprises and other backbone system enterprises, and the trend is seen to continue at a rapid pace.
The software cluster product family developed and scheduled for release by NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION is indispensable for databases, applications, Web servers and other e-business systems, where the implementation of clusters can improve reliability and prevent system crashes while enhancing system functions. The product line includes three options: the Progart/Local Cluster Enterprise for business management and backbone systems, Local clusters for small and middle-sized businesses, and "under STUDY" for SOHO businesses. These products provide functions including monitoring services, switching servers, distributing load and other software-based functionality without requiring dedicated load-concentrated servers. They also support software clustering. By facilitating server configuration without expensive dedicated servers and adopting the free Linux operating system, the clusters can reduce costs by two-thirds compared to other products.
NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION identifies Linux and total solutions based on Linux as an important component of its long-term business strategy, and has therefore offered the PROgART ( *2 ) Linux support service to customers. By incorporating new cluster products into the PROgART Linux total solution package, NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION will offer services to a diversified range of businesses, including mission-critical service providers such as the financial and communication industries, public institutions, retailers, and SOHO.
NTT COMMUNICATIONWARE CORPORATION plans to exhibit the newly released software cluster at the Linux World Conference & Demo to be held at Tokyo Fashion-town (Harumi, Tokyo) on October 31 and November 1.
