The softswitch SS70V and the compound PHS system to be integrated with the SIP protocol
Joint development of the "VoIP Compound PHS System" solution started

The NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (hereinafter, NTT COMWARE, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) and the Iwasaki Electric Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, IWATSU, Head Office: Suginami-ku, Tokyo, President: Kuniaki Ohara) have started the joint development of Japan's first integrated solution of the softswitch (*2) and the compound PHS system (*3) using the SIP (*1) protocol. The sale of this product is targeted for December.

[Objective]

By integrating the "Softswitch SS70V (hereinafter, SS70V)", which is presently being marketed with the sophisticated VoIP technology acquired by NTT COMWARE and the "Compound PHS" of IWATSU, which is the top selling of the compound PHS systems in the domestic market using the SIP protocol which will become the core technology in future VoIP systems of the IETF standard, solution expansion and enhancement of market competitiveness in the softswitch business.

[Completed image of the developed solution]

With the integrated solution to be jointly developed, the compound PHS system will be integrated into the various VoIP solution provided by the SS70V without compromising the convenience of the compound PHS. As a result, the compound PHS antenna will be equipped on the IP network thus making it possible to utilize the sophisticated office communication environment provided by the SS70V irrespective of IP telephone or compound PHS terminal.

Up to now, in cases where the VoIP system was installed in offices already utilizing the compound PHS system, it was necessary to either install the VoIP system independently from the current compound PHS and to make a connection between the two or to dismantle the compound PHS system and install the VoIP system. In the former case, as only a connection is made between different multiple systems a centralization of the end points such as the IP telephone and the compound PHS terminal was not possible. Therefore, there remained the issue of providing the sophisticated service of the VoIP system to all of the end points. In the latter case, the convenience of the compound PHS that had been so for enjoyed was lost. With the new integrated solution, the compound PHS is integrated into the softswitch system without compromising its convenience and also the management of the end points is centralized by the softswitch.

In the past, when installing the compound PHS system in multiple locations within the same company it was necessary to install a master control at each location and to make a connection between the systems. With the new integrated solution, by installing the softswitch in just one location of the network, centralized management of IP telephones and compound PHS terminals of multiple locations as well as digital terminals used in present PBX is possible. With this, it is possible to significantly reduce the initial cost of installing the system and also the operation costs thereafter.

[The role of both of the companies in the joint development]

With this joint development, in order to enrich the SS70V solution menu, in addition to NTT COMWARE and IWATSU, the U.S. based Vocal Data company, which is the provision source of the SS70V platform as well as a partner of NTT COMWARE, will work together in the development. IWATSU will provide compound PHS system know-how and NTT COMWARE and Vocal Data will provide softswitch know-how. Furthermore, based on the technological accumulation of the three companies regarding the pursuance of the SIP protocol, a joint development of an integrated solution with the SIP will be undertaken.
