Aiming for quality improvement and short term development with the software development global standard tool
- Accreditation system of the RATIONAL SOFTWARE CORPORATION's object-oriented technology to be started -
From December, the NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (hereinafter, NTT COMWARE, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) based on the alliance with the NIHON RATIONAL SOFTWARE CORPORATION (hereinafter, NIHON RATIONAL, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Hajime Saito) will begin operation of the "object-oriented architectonics", "Rational unification process", and "demand specification control" employee technique accreditation system due to the company-wide deployment of the "Rational Unified Process (hereinafter, RUP*1)" and the "Rational ClearCase (*2) / Rational ClearQuest (*3)" as the standard development method within the NTT COMWARE company.

[Outline of the accreditation system]
The accreditation system to be commenced is the know-how contents of the Rational University, which is the education system of the US RATIONAL SOFTWARE CORPORATION (hereinafter, RATIONAL CORPORATION, Head Office: California, U.S.A., Chairman: Paul Levy, Chief Executive Officer: Michael Devlin), a global standard in the software development field, which has been customized for NTT COMWARE. Each is made up of 4 steps beginning with the "Rational accredited engineer", which is the official primary accreditation of the RATIONAL CORPORATION, and continuing on to the "Rational accredited practitioner", who is able to conduct consultations to NTT COMWARE customers, then to the "Rational accredited trainer", who is able to instruct ensemble training courses of RATIONAL to NTT COMWARE customers, and lastly to the top-class "Rational accredited lead consultant", who is able to conduct consultations to those other than NTT COMWARE customers as well as to instruct ensemble training courses. This is the first time anywhere that the RATIONAL CORPORATION has authorized the operation of the accreditation system to another company.
[Accreditation process]
In order to become accredited, not only the conventional ensemble form is utilized, but one must enroll in the WBT (Web Based Training), which has been developed by the RATIONAL CORPORATION and is sold in the Japanese market by NTT COMWARE, then pass the Web base test, and after gaining business experience through OJT (on the job training) is then officially accredited and licensed. Two NTT COMWARE employees, who are the first to obtain the "Rational accredited trainer" and the "Rational accredited lead consultant" license from the RATIONAL CORPORATION, will assume a pivotal role in this sequential process.
[Efforts by NTT COMWARE]
At NTT COMWARE, from July of 2001, 4 pilot projects have been conducted to judge the effectiveness of the RUP and Rational tools. As a result, shortening of time to delivery, while securing high reliability and quality, has been confirmed. Consequently, NTT COMWARE as a total group, including partner companies, plans to expand development of object-oriented based systems by fostering approximately 4,000 RUP technicians within the next 3years and promoting their license acquisition.
[Background]
In the fast expanding web-based business field, there is a simultaneous demand for reduction of software development time and costs as well as developments with high quality, flexibility, and high expandability. In order to accomplish this, up-grading and standardization of development methods is essential. For that purpose, the latest object-oriented related software technology is necessary. However, it is said that Japan is far behind Europe and the United States in this field and in order to respond to the rapidly increasing issues that are based on the object-oriented technology, the prime task is to foster more Japanese engineers directed towards this area of technology.

- *1 Rational Unified Process
- With object-oriented technology such as Java and UML rapidly becoming common, the importance of regulating "how to develop" software is being newly acknowledged. The Rational Unified Process, is a high-powered knowledge base that comprehensively covers the development lifecycle such as business modeling, requirement definition, analysis / planning, packaging, testing, and installation. With the UML (Unified Modeling Language) as its base, guidelines to efficiently implement component development are offered in easy to understand HTML form. As templates of documents that become necessary with the development of each process is included, it also contributes to the reduction in development terms. Also, as it can be flexibly customized depending on the scale of the development and/or the type of application, it is possible to create a process adapted to the project.
- *2 Rational ClearCase
- With software becoming large-scale and increasingly complex, developments in geographically decentralized environments as well as simultaneous / parallel developments of multiple projects is becoming common. Under such complex environments, in order to make software development projects successful, mere version management is not enough. Rational ClearCase, by concurrently conducting version management, work space management, build management, and process management, is a software composition management (SCM) system that powerfully supports software developments by teams.
- *3 Rational ClearQuest
- At the same time that software developments is becoming increasingly complex, the quality demand is becoming higher and the release cycle is becoming extremely short. Under such conditions, in order to effectively conduct software development projects throughout its lifecycle, it is absolutely imperative to consistently conduct modification request managements such as bugs, defections, and function supplementation / modifications. Rational ClearQuest solidifies all the members of the development team from the project manager, the developer, to the QA representative and thoroughly implements the management of modification request issues related to the software development. It offers a flexible and scalable modification management solution that not only covers large-scale geographically decentralized development projects, but it can also be easily customized depending on the test tool and/or format management system combination and/or original development processes.
