Sales of Japan's first IP traffic control system launched
- Prevents IP telephone networks from going down as a result of concentrated traffic due to overload ticket reservations and one-ring phone scams -

In July, NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) will launch sales of the "IP traffic control system [IP-TOS] ver.1", a system that automatically monitors and controls call flows (traffic) of IP telephone networks. This system will control sudden traffic increases and congestions due to overload ticket reservations and one-ring phone scams that occur sporadically and at simultaneous timings on the IP telephone network which is attracting attention as the new communication infrastructure.

[ Outline ]

The "IP-TOS" consists of the "Congestion detection function", the "Traffic control function" and the "Abnormal traffic detection function". The "Congestion detection function" conducts real time monitoring of connection statuses of telephone calls by subscriber units. In a situation where traffic that exceeds the processing capacity of a single connection occurs, it detects the call recipient subscriber of the congestion source (See Figure 1). The "Traffic control function" automatically controls connections of the detected congestion subscriber when making a transmission to the subscriber's telephone number and there is no impact to phone calls to numbers other than those that are detected (See Figure 2). The "Abnormal traffic detection function" detects one-ring phone scam subscribers who conduct continuous call disconnections before the recipients can answer and whose purpose is not to make calls but only to leave call registers (See Figure 3).

[ Installment merits ]

By utilizing the "IP-TOS", IP telephone providers are able to control only the invalid calls that oppress the IP telephone network and are able to take maximum advantage of the capabilities of the network thus providing high quality IP telephone services. Also, as it becomes unnecessary to possess excessive network facilities to maintain stability, it realizes a high performance management.

[ System architecture ]

The "IP-TOS" consists of the following 4 mechanisms.
(1) Server
Based on the traffic determination results, it determines controls and cancel releases and sends traffic control execution instructions.
(2) Agent
Conducts traffic determinations. Also, it executes traffic control when instructed from the server.
(3) Traffic count server
Collects the determination results of the Agent and detects congestions and one-ring phone scams.
(4) Client
A terminal that conducts displays and operations.

[ Market development ]

NTT COMWARE will target approximately 3 billion yen in total sales of IP telephone quality solutions by the end of the year 2005, centering on the IP-TOS and targeting IP telephone providers, IP Centrex businesses and IP contact center providers.

[ Development process and future plans ]

NTT COMWARE has developed a traffic control system for the current telephone network that is utilized by over 6 million subscribers and has accumulated traffic control know-how over a long period. The "IP-TOS" was developed by applying this technology and know-how to IP network traffic control. In the future, a control function is being developed that will be able to detect malicious attacks such as DoS(*1)/DDoS(*2) at the SIP level which has the possibility of shutting down an entire IP telephone service.

[ Background ]

A traffic control system which prevents the shutting down of networks due to congestions resulting in over flooding of the processing capacity of telephone switchboards and prevents situations where connections are difficult as a result of process disruption is installed in the present subscriber telephone networks. Currently, there is no existing traffic control system for the IP telephone network and there are concerns that confusion resulting in congestions may occur when the IP telephone network matures as a communication infrastructure. Furthermore, there is a danger that congestions peculiar to IP telephone networks may occur such as a virus that automatically activates numerous IP telephones and executes dials. With the rising momentum of IP telephone installments, the development of a system to prevent this kind of trouble has been anticipated.

[ exhibition ]

NTT COMWARE will be exhibiting at the "NETWORLD + INTEROP 2003 TOKYO" to be held at the Makuhari Messe from July 2nd (Wed) to the 4th (Fri) and will introduce its VoIP total solution series, the "NEXIPT", including the "IP-TOS".

[ Glossary ]
*1: DoS (Denial of Services)
An attack through the network. Attacks that disables computers and routers by transmitting fraudulent data and/or paralyzes networks by increasing traffic.
*2: DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service)
An attack that over-floods communication channels and close-downs its functions by transmitting packets to a specific server at simultaneous timings from a mass number of computers dispersed on multiple networks. The characteristic of this attack is that the actual computer managers and users that send the packets have no attack intents, but rather the computers are manipulated by malicious third parties with such tools as the Trojan Horse and the non-knowing managers and users are made to participate in the attacks without realizing it.
