IP based video conferencing system "Visual Conference" upgrade version released

NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) on July 1st, will launch sales of the IP based next generation network solution series NEXIPT "Visual Conference" (a coined term from NEXT and IP) upgrade version, which allows conferencing and meetings where voices, images and information can be exchanged by using computer terminals and/ or teleconferencing terminals at multiple points.

[ Characteristics ]

With the "Visual Conference" it is possible to conduct conferences and meetings where one can listen to the voices and see the images as well as the data while seated at one's own terminal. The upgrade version allows the participants not only look at the data displayed, but it allows the participants to make changes in the data and to reflect the changes on the monitors of the respective participants.
The main functions included are: (1) the "operation substitute function" which allows others to operate computers on behalf of executive officers who do not directly operate computers, (2) the "private chat function" which allows elective participants to chat during conferences. (3) the &qot;mandatory participant withdrawal function" which allows the conference organizer to conduct mandatory withdrawal of selected participants when their presence becomes no longer necessary and (4) the "conference capture function (optional)", which records the voices, images, and data operations of the conference and which can be edited and stored like videos as conference minutes, has also been added in order to bring teleconferencing closer to all the participants gathered in a single room. As it is possible to flexibly conduct set-ups of such functions in accordance with the conference style, different types of conferences such as executive conferences, management planning conferences, presentations, in-house training conferences, as well as collaborative activities of designs may be operated within a single company.
Also, communication between terminals with different compressibility ratios, such as conferences between IP networks and public line networks with participation by voice from public line networks, has been made possible.

[ System structure ]

The "Visual Conference" is made up of the VoIP technology based voice mixing and image distribution "conference server", the conference reservation management / control and simultaneous data control "manage server", the "conference client software" to be installed in the computer to be used for voice / image two-way transmission / replay, and the commercially available "teleconferencing terminal".

[ Installment merits ]

Reduction of costs and risks accompanying travel necessary for conference participation as well as costs related to facility usages achieves operational efficiency and increases the competitiveness of companies.

[ Application and future expansions ]

By utilizing the functions of the "Visual conference", it is possible to connect the head office and branch offices to conduct in-house training sessions. At education-related organizations, at-home education through the internet becomes possible. Furthermore, it is possible to apply it to customer reception systems of companies. Linkage to portable information terminals are expected in the near future as well as improvements to the present functions. The price is approximately 5 million yen for simultaneous connections of 10 terminals (the price varies depending on the network environment and function settings, etc.). The sales target is approximately 2 billion yen in the next 3 years.

[ Background ]

The conference style varies depending on the company and furthermore, conference styles can be segmented into such function as executive conferences and internal regular meetings. In group meetings free and flexible voice and data operation is necessary. In "panel discussion style" conferences the chairman holds the power and it is necessary to limit the comments and changes to the data. With conventional teleconferencing systems only the meeting organizer was able to make changes to the data. Therefore, the general systems were just for free discussions.

[ "NETWORLD + INTEROP 2003 TOKYO" exhibition ]

The next generation network solution series NEXIPT will be exhibited at the "NETWORLD + INTEROP 2003 TOKYO" to be held at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba from July 2nd (Wednesday) to the 4th (Friday). With regards to the "Visual Conference", it will be introduced using demonstrations. An introduction of a company customer reception system where a navigator who is displayed on a glass screen (glass vision) guides customers through a venue will also be conducted as an application example of the system.
