Approximately 3,200 employees of the Development Division have achieved Level 3 of the software development process Capability Maturity Model (CMM)

Approximately 3200 employees of the System Department which is the system development division of the NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Yuji Matsuo) achieved Level 3 of the "Software development process capability maturity model", the CMM(*1) Level 3, in July.

[Outline of the CMM Level 3]

The "CMM Level 3" is recognized when an entire organization standardizes a development process and conducts operations based on that standardized development process. The CMM is divided into levels from the initial "Level 1" of personalized software development, which creates changes in quality and productivity depending on the capability of the individual developer, to the optimized "Level 5", where the development process is voluntarily and constantly improved and enhanced.

[Background]

NTT COMWARE has constantly pursued process improvements to improve productivity as well as product quality. The company obtained the ISO9001 (1994 version) certification in 1997 and the ISO9001 (2000 version) certification in 2002. In order to further heighten the company's advantage in the market the company began process improvements based on the CMM which makes possible a more objective assessment of the company's capability. In October of 2002, approximately 300 employees of a pilot project within the System Department acquired the CMM Level 3. Furthermore, an achievement by all the employees of the System Development Division was pursued and the CMM Level 3 was successfully achieved.

[Future undertakings]

The US Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute which created and operates the CMM will end its support of the CMM in December of 2003. It is recommending transitions to the "CMMI (*2)" which is an integration of the capability maturity model of the system engineering process and the software procurement process. NTT COMWARE will actively pursue process improvement activities based on the CMMI.

[Glossary]

*1: CMM(Capability Maturity Model)
It is a standard that objectively shows software development capabilities. It was created by and is advocated by the US Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. In the US, the Department of National Defense demands a CMM Level 3 or over as a condition when making tender bids for software development issues. The CMM is widely used by government departments to public companies.

The CMM capability maturity level
CMM Level 1 (Initial)
A level where there is no set development process and personal development of software, where the capability of the individual members of the organization changes the quality of the products and productivity.
CMM Level 2 (Repeatable)
A level where basic management such as cost management and schedule managements are being conducted.
CMM Level 3 (Defined)
A sophisticated level where an entire organization's development process is standardized / integrated and the results are clearly defined.
CMM Level 4 (Managed)
A sophisticated level where the development progress is constantly quantitatively monitored and where there is the capability to immediately resolve any envisaged problems.
CMM Level 5 (Optimizing)
The top level where there is the capability to voluntarily as well as constantly improve the development process.

*2: CMMI(Capability Maturity Model Integration)
It is an integration of the software development process Capability Maturity Model (CMM) with the system engineering process Capability Maturity Model and the software procurement process Capability Maturity Model.
