Product / information link between companies utilizing IC tags
Sales of the "RFID middleware" launched
- Complies to the establishment specifications of EPCglobal *1, the US RFID standard-setting organization -

Beginning February 3rd, the NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (hereinafter, NTT COMWARE, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President Yuji Matsuo), will provide a system integration service with the "RFID middleware" which improves the management of stock and distribution using IC tags that are attached to products and/or resources as its core.

[ Outline of the "RFID middleware" ]

The "RFID middleware" is a platform that makes RFID network system construction possible. This network system establishes linkage / sharing of information between multiple companies by consolidating obtainable product information and positional information of individual products from the IC tags on the network server.
It will be comprised of the "Savant", the "EPCIS" and the "ONS" which conforms to the specifications established by the US RFID standard-setting organization, EPCglobal.
The "Savant" receives the ID that is read by the reader from the IC tags attached to each individual product using electromagnetic waves and this ID is displayed by "ONS". Also, manufacturing information, distribution records and information of the corresponding product is exchanged with the "EPCIS". By combining the product information with business applications, the streamlining of production / stock / resource management as well as linkage of distribution management data and quality management data becomes possible.
The characteristics are (1) a control function that provides optimum traffic as well as dependability due to a data safeguard function that responds to sudden wire disconnections (2) an expandability that allows flexible linkage with other middleware that complies to the specifications established by EPCglobal as well as many reader/writers (3) a maintenance function that enables remote centralized control of RFID networks (4) a security system that prevents unauthorized access, data falsifications, impersonated responses and controlling of access to shared information during inter-business transactions (5) a high flexibility that allows responses to various OS and server constructions.

[ Applicability domain and sales style of the "RFID middleware" ]

The "RFID middleware" can be utilized on SCM, such as product stock management and distribution management as well as production line management that extends across multiple companies. The sales style will consist of offers to companies of a system integration service with the "RFID middleware" as its core.

[ Undertakings of the RFID ]

NTT COMWARE, in August of 2002, began participation in the "Auto-ID Center" at the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology which is the predecessor of EPCglobal and has continued research developments of Auto-ID platforms. In October of 2002, NTT COMWARE conducted joint demonstration experiments of "Logistic management of PET bottle materials using IC tags" with the Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. and Sun Microsystems K.K. using the "RFID middleware" as well as other various demonstration experiments. The company will integrate accumulated cultivated know-how regarding the RFID with know-how regarding network technologies that support the Japanese telecommunications infrastructures as well as know-how regarding construction and operation of business applications to provide a highly dependable RFID system environment.

*1: EPCglobal, Inc.
A nonprofit organization established with a joint capital investment by the US Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC, Inc.) and the Belgium EAN International. The Auto-ID Center will become Auto-ID, Labs and will sign over all intellectual property rights to the EPCglobal, Inc. and will conduct research developments as an affiliation of the EPCglobal, Inc.
