Joint promotion of Linux System's introduction to business enterprises
A collaboration business by SGI Japan, NTT Comware and Oracle Corporation JapanThe industry standard database will be installed in the IA-64 & Linux server to execute SI


Three companies, SGI Japan, Ltd. (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, President: Norio Izumi), NTT COMWARE CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President Yuji Matsuo) and Oracle Corporation Japan (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Masaaki Shintaku) will collaborate on the sales of the Linux system to promote the popularization of the Linux in the corporate business system field. The three companies which have engaged actively in the Linux by utilizing the characteristics of each company and jointly leading the market will aggressively promote the installation of the Linux system in companies.


[ Outline of the collaboration ]

The core of the collaboration business will be the low-priced IA-64 Linux server "SGI Altix 350" which sales was launched by SGI Japan in January of 2004. This server is equipped with both the industry standard Intel® and Itanium®. It is a high cost performance optimum business field Linux product utilizing a high capacity shared memory system and a modular framework architecture which makes flexible system construction possible.
The Altix 350 will be equipped with the Oracle Corporation Japan "Oracle Database" which will provide the highest standards of the industry with regards to availability, processing capacity and expandability. Oracle Corporation Japan which holds a dominant share in the Linux database market will authorize and guarantee integrations and its support center will provide maintenances.
NTT Comware which has numerous successes with Linux base system integrations will integrate and sell the Altix 350 as an optimum business system that fits each company's size and business type by applying it to intelligence system DB servers, etc.


[ Market development ]

Three companies equipped with the industry's highest standard "Oracle Database" and utilizing the dominantly high cost performance Altix 350 will promote Linux demands for business type servers with applications to various system such as data mining, billing and customer management in fields such as financial, stock brokerage and manufacturing.


[ Background of the collaboration ]

The popularization of Linux as an open source OS began in the scientific computation field and recently interest in the installment of Linux is increasing in the business field as well.
Consequently, beginning with engineering servers of the manufacturing industry such as the automotive industry, the three companies (1) SGI Japan with its sales success of IA-64&Linux servers having over 1000CPU in the domestic market (2) Oracle Corporation Japan being one of the first to approach Linux compliancy and with its many successes in the supply of Linux system platforms that fulfill availability and expandability demands of the enterprise field and (3) NTT Comware with its many Linux engineers and its many achievements in the system integration field have collaborated to offer a 64 bit Linux system service targeted to the business field.


[ Approaches of each company to the Linux business ]

·SGI Japan
SGI Japan officially announced its "New business strategy in the Linux field" in September of 1999. Especially regarding Linux in the enterprise field the company has carried out leading-edge approaches ahead of other companies.
In particular, the "Altix 3000 series" which was launched in February of 2003 is a scalable Linux server that has created the worldfs first 1 node 64 CPU architecture with Linux.
Beginning with the automotive industry, the company has installed the "Altix 3000 series" as an engineering server to approximately 30 companies. Also, in the scientific computation field the company has successively made installations of large scale parallel systems to the center machine (108CPU format) of the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, the University of Tokyo Institute of Industrial Science (64CPU), and The Institute of Statistical Mathematics (256 CPU).
It has received high praised from its users as a high performance Linux system that is outstanding in its high capacity common memory and expandability. With such achievements as the base the company will offer Linux systems that are optimum for the business field as well.

·NTT Comware
NTT Comware realized early on the importance of the role fulfilled by open sources, such as Linux, in customer oriented flexible system architectures. The company established a Linux center in 1999 and in 2000 started Japan's first total Linux related service from consulting to system construction, operation and maintenance. NTT Comware has many successes with Linux such as constructions of NTT communication systems, transplants from UNIX and the constructions of VoIP as well as educational systems. In November of 2003, the company successively participated in the industry-government-academia "Japan OSS Promotion Forum" followed by the "Open Source Development Laboratory" of the US based global consortium.
Also, at the same time the company was extremely active in the industry-government-academia collaboration project and the NPO. Many of the more than 3000 employees that deal with UNIX are also able to deal with Linux. They are group of network construction and system experts.

·Oracle Corporation Japan
Oracle Corporation Japan is focused on providing a Linux-based low cost high performance IT infrastructure since the launch of its first Linux OS compliant Oracle database in March of 1999. In particular, the combination of the Linux version Oracle database with the database clusters technology, the "Oracle Real Application Clusters" is an outstanding IT platform which provides a low cost enterprise system that is exceptional in its expandability and availability. Also, the company is aggressively working on the expansion of sales in the IA market where dramatic growth is expected by integrating the Oracle database to the latest "Itanium® Processor Family". Also, in June of 2002, Miracle Linux was established as an affiliated company and both companies will put their effort into the popularization of the Linux business in the Japanese market enterprise field.

Intel is interested in the SGI Altix series which is equipped with both Intel® and Itanium® processors as one of the high-end servers that has achieved the industry's top class scalability and large-capacity memory with the advanced common memory architecture.
Regarding the undertaking of the three companies that will lead a new computing era in the domestic business field, we look forward to the contribution by the Intel® and Itanium® processors.

Turbolinux, Inc.
Turbolinux welcomes the collaboration by SGI Japan, NTT Comware and Oracle Corporation Japan which targets the expansion of the Linux market in the business field with the Itanium2+Linux.
Turbolinux will provide to the SGI Altix 350 Linux OS the core of this collaboration, the 64 bit high speed processor Itanium exclusive high-end server platform the "Turbolinux Enterprise Server8 for Intel Itanium Processor Family" which is ideal for scientific computation and as a DB server.
The growth of Linux in the business field is significant and we are convinced that this collaboration will further accelerate Linux installments in this field.

Miracle Linux Corporation
Miracle Linux welcomes the collaboration by the three companies in the Linux business field.
Miracle Linux has since its establishment promoted the usage expansion of the Linux in the enterprise field centering on the Oracle database.
