NTT Billing Solutions Corporation (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Haruo Imai; hereinafter; NTT Billing Solutions) has initiated its data printing service which contracts all areas of the printing process up to and including shipment. This service utilizes double-sided full color inkjet on-demand variable printing which allows users to vary the content of printing jobs. With this solution, tens of millions of different printing patterns can be printed at the rate of about 500 pages per minute. Based on the success of the provision of this service to the UCS Corporation (Head office: Inazawa City, Aichi prefecture; President: Toshiteru Matsuno), NTT Billing Solutions has received orders from other firms, in particular firms within the credit card industry which is anticipated to have high demand for this service in the future.

[Overview of On-demand Variable Printing]
The on-demand variable printing process involves the replacement of the data for each printing item before it is printed. This allows users to print what they need when they need it and in the required amount. The information on a printed credit card statement includes usage and billing details, as well as advertising and other related information. With on-demand variable printing, advertising and other information can be varied so as to better suit customer attributes including age group, sex and residential area. For example, information on holidays in Korea can be printed on the statements of customers belonging to the female age group in which Korean culture and travel is enjoying great popularity, and further information on special sales events occurring at nearby locations can also be included. In addition, full-color ink jet printing allows for the printing of clear and vivid pictures and illustrations which can lead to increased customer satisfaction and credit card usage.
[Usage of this Service by UCS]
UCS, the first user of this service, began utilizing on-demand variable printing for the printing of the credit card statements of its 2.15 million customers from February 23. UCS classifies customers according to age group, sex and residential area, and currently prints over 80 different variations of advertising for their credit card statements.
[Future Developments]
In order to further improve this data printing service as a new one-to-one marketing tool, a system is currently under consideration which will automatically determine customer trends from credit card information. This in turn will allow for the timely printing of advertising and information which suits customer needs.
[Overview of NTT Billing Solutions]
NTT Billing Solutions prints and issues the billing statements for each company in the NTT Group for a total of approximately 70 million statements each month. NTT Billing Solutions is also pursuing additional business areas including: (1) electronic documentation for web-based billing details confirmation; (2) postal solutions which combine independent distribution networks with the discount system offered by the Japan Post Corporation; and (3) account services which create and issue billing details from public utilities.
