[Background]
As information leakage issues and incidents gain higher visibility, companies are increasingly
required to strictly control access to their information devices.
Many companies are studying whether they should use biometrics authentication method or
introduce Thin Client to enable a uniform management of their servers instead of allowing PCs to
store data.
NTT Comwarefs e-UBF Enterprise Fingerprint Authentication Solution of fingerprint
authentication for Windows logon and ID and password entry is available,
while Sun Microsystems has Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client on the market as well.
With these products, NTT Comware combined NTT Comwarefs fingerprint authentication method and
Thin Client to provide clients with a highly secured network environment.
e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit will be available in August.
e-UBF Enterprise Fingerprint Authentication Solution
[About e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit]
e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit (*1) is a fingerprint authentication system operable as a client
of e-UBF Enterprise Fingerprint Solution, which has been available to purchase.
e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit employs the frequency analysis method (*2)
(a high speed authentication method that converts the pattern of an individualfs fingerprints
into numerical data). This method allows anyone to register fingerprints, which is different from
other conventional fingerprint authentication products. Furthermore, as it is not necessary to
store the image of the entire fingerprint, there is no risk of leakage of any fingerprint record
information. The fingerprint authentication sensors are sweep-type sensors.
This eliminates the risk of forged fingerprints being created from residual fingerprints
in the sensor itself. This should relieve the psychological anxiety of users about such risks.
This method using the IC card for Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client provides higher security and usability.
Configuration of e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit
(*1) e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit is a product jointly developed by Infofarm Co., Ltd.
(Head Office; Gifu-shi, Gifu Pref.: President; Hirofumi Tsuji) and NTT Comware with the
technological assistance of Sun Microsystems and DDS, Inc. (Head office: Nagoya-shi, Aichi Pref.:
President; Kenji Miyoshino). This product is distributed by NTT Comware.
(*2) Frequency analysis-based authentication algorithm was developed by Professor Taizo Umezaki
of Nagoya Institute of Technology Graduate School and DDS as a joint venture.
[About Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client]
Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client has no general-purpose OS installed. The terminal only functions to
process communications through networks and to create images received inbound. General PCs need
the client terminals to have anti-virus software installed as well as to update the OS.
Even for some Thin Client products using general-purpose OS, the pre-installed programs need to
go through regular maintenance or be kept updated from the server using a designated tool.
Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client is Thin Client without the need to manage the terminal including version
updates and function upgrading of the applications.
[Future Scenarios]
Fingerprint authentication is a highly secure authentication method which converts the individual
pattern found on fingerprints, so that it eliminates many problems such as loss or theft.
Thin Client has gained attention because of its effect in security enforcement and TCO reduction.
An increasing number of private companies and public offices are considering applying this system.
NTT Comware provides e-UBF for Sun Ray Kit to achieve a highly secured network environment by
combining fingerprint authentication and Thin Client.
[Display at Expo]
The new model comprised of Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client and e-UBFEnterprise Fingerprint Authentication
Solution demonstration will be displayed at the Sun Microsystems booth at INTEROP TOKYO 2006 held
at Makuhari Messe, Chiba from June 7th (Wednesday) until the 9th (Friday), 2006.
