NTT Comware's RFID Middleware Achieved the First EPCglobal Certification Mark as Software
NTT Comware Corporation (below, NTT Comware; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuhji Imai)
announces that RFID Middleware has achieved the first certification from EPCglobal's
(Head office: the United States) Conformance Test as a software (certification) (*1)
on October 18, 2006 (the US Time).

[Background]
The conventional RFID had issues to overcome such as interconnections, though which was difficult
because the manufacturers used their own unique interfaces. EPCglobal, the international
standards, has been working on development of standards ranging from hardware including tag
readers to software for open network systems. Under these circumstances, EPCglobal commenced to
accept applications for a certification to recognize the software conformance to ALE level events
in August 2006.
* Features of ALE (Application Level Events)
ALE is a middleware related specification for collection and filtering of read points of RFID
readers. The main benefit of ALE is facilitation of various filtering logic or events per
application such as the time-specified events and EPC data pattern specification. ALE saves data
in the vast amount of RFID read events through RFID readers in order to mitigate extra loads on
servers to collect and manage the tag data
[About the Certification Award]
NTT Comware believes that the information obtained through the use of RFID is valuable to share
and use on the network for various industries. RFID is therefore required to interlink with various
systems. NTTComware has launched sales of RFID Middleware complied with the specification of
Auto-ID Center or the predecessor of EPCglobal in February 2004 and followed the revisions of the
specification.
Then NTT Comware achieved the Software Certification. This helps RFID Middleware to secure
compatibility with the high-end applications as well as to enable a smooth linkage with systems
of other industries. RFID Middleware has the potential for users to develop a system with the
interface in conformance to the EPCglobal's standard specification, which provides the scalability
to achieve interconnection and development of other open and global systems in the future.
[Future Development]
NTT Comware's RFID Middleware has proved its function for the commodity management in department
stores that is given high marks by experts in the world. This system is the full-function NW type
RFID system which is still rare in Japan. Its multi-vendor system configuration including the tag
readers achieves a huge amount of information distribution to multiple points as well as a low cost
and fast establishment of RFID network systems. The system provides high quality features such as
interconnection with other systems, smooth control of huge amount of data and highly secured network.
NTT Comware keeps moving toward a ubiquitous society which involves the RFID Middleware platform
based on the considerable achievements and experiences of NTT's core corporate functions and
network systems for years.
[Certification Mark]
EPCglobal awarded the NTT Comware product with the GSRN (Global Service Relation Number) to
represent the EPCglobal Certification Mark below.
