Participation of NTT Comware, IIJ, Oracle Japan and Japan VeriSign in International Logistics Demonstration Experiment of EPCglobal Transportation & Logistics Services Industry Action Group
-- Launch of Japan Application Consortium and the Standard RFID System using RFID (electronic tags) for International Logistics --
NTT Comware Corporation (below, NTT Comware; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuhji Imai),
Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (below, IIJ; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Koichi Suzuki),
Oracle Corporation Japan (below, Oracle Corporation Japan; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo ,
President: Masaaki Shintaku), Japan VeriSign K.K. (below, Japan VeriSign; Head office: Chuo-ku,
Tokyo, President and CEO: Teruhide Hashimoto) will develop the RFID system as a joint project as a
joint project. This system should conform to the specification of the standards and verified through
demonstration experiments of international logistics to be conducted by EPCglobal (*1) an international
RFID standard organization from January.

[Outline and Objectives of Demonstration Experiment]
For global supply chains that require international logistics, distribution companies need to
manage diverse information for a significant number of clients worldwide to meet their specific needs.
However, it could cause problems in cost to adopt the system, as which should be updated for more
advanced and complicated systems year by year.
Distribution businesses are expected to establish a global standard to cope with increase of RFID
services for advancement and visualization of the process of the entire industry. Under these circumstances,
major distribution companies established Transportation & Logistics Services Industry Action Group
(November 2005) (*2) as part of the programs of EPCglobal an international standard organization,
for promotion to standardize the system.
With networking of RFID systems of various countries and companies, as long as these are in
compliance with the EPCglobal standards, an open platform to distribute the supply chain information
related to logistic can be established. It will contribute to achieve visualization, optimization
and facilitation of supply chains processes of parties concerned in the logistics (vendor and sender)
so as to revitalize the entire business activities.
The companies participating in this project will prove efficiency and usability of the open platform
to achieve RFID information distribution through the demonstration experiments.
* Products to be Provided
RFID Middleware (NTT Comware and Oracle Corporation Japan)
EPCIS (IIJ, NTT Comware and Oracle Corporation Japan)
ONS and Local ONS (VeriSign)
[Future Scenarios]
Results of the demonstration experiments will be used for further promotion of RFID as a global
standard, which may be provided to potential users with the know-hows of application of RFID in
terms of logistics. As RFID System is expected to be a high quality system with valuable functions
such as to facilitate networking with other systems, control massive amounts of data and achieve a
highly secure network environment, NTT Compare aims to achieve a brand new and world-wide open
platform in cooperation with the partner companies based on their experiences and technical
capabilities. We have received comments on this press release from Ministry of Economy, Trade and
Industry and NYK LINE as below.
[Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry]
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has been actively cooperating in promotion of EPCglobal
to promote a global standard as it is crucial to use RFID for further development of Distribution
Business. We hope that this large scale demonstration experiment for global logistics would
contribute to development of the entire distribution industry as well as to achieve an advanced
supply chain system with RFID System that Japanese companies are taking a lead for development.

[NYK LINE]
NYK LINE and MTI welcome the four prestigious companies as IIJ, NTT Comware, Oracle Corporation
Japan, and VeriSign to play a key role in demonstration and experiments of EPCglobal Transportation
& Logistics Services Industry Action Group. As the co-chair of Transportation & Logistics Services
Industry Action Group, we wish for success of this experiment and anticipate that this project will
further accelerate advancement of RFID Solutions through challenges of IIJ, NTT Comware, Japan Oracle
and VeriSign in the distribution industry.

[Terminology]
*1EPCglobal
EPCglobal (Head office: Prinston, New Jersey) is a non-profit organization which was established
aiming development, promotion and standardization of the next generation data carrier including
RFID and the Internet-based EPCglobal Network System instead of bar codes. This organization has
various working groups related to the study of standardization. It is a joint venture organization
established between EAN International (the international organization of bar codes) and the Uniform
Code Council, UCC (the logistics code organization in the United State: currently GS1 US), which
has various working groups concerning standardization of systems. 1073 member companies currently
participated in this organization as of December 2006.
*2EPCglobal Transportation & Logistics Services Industry Action Group
(Transportation & Logistics Services Industry Action Group) was established in November 2005 for
standardization of electronic tags to achieve efficiency of a global logistics. This working group
summarizes issues related to electronic tags of the global logistics industry through the studies
on business cases of potentials for a practical use of the electronic tag including sea, land and
air transportation, logistical operations in yards or warehouse or import/export procedures. Japan
is also taking a lead in this field as quite a number of Japanese companies are the members
including NYK LINE as the co-chair of Transportation & Logistics Services Industry Action Group.
