Realization of Mobile Digital Pen Gateway
-- The portable handwriting capture device transfers notes and illustrations on real time while away from your desk --

NTT Comware Corporation (below, NTT Comware; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuhji Imai) developed the mobile version of Digital Pen Gateway System. This system enables a real time transfer of data of handwritten notes and drawings to a server through the mobile terminal.
Using the mobile terminal will expand the possibilities of digital pens.

[Background]
While Digital Pen Gateway5 is available as a desktop system using the ultra-small Linux server (L-Box), NTT Comware studied its portable version to meet the needs of markets where handwritten input is essential, such as data collection, to transmit the data on a real time basis to an access point from wherever inconvenient to install the system on desktop or outside.
The desktop version of Digital Pen Gateway has been widely used since the launch of sales in February 2005 as the access point device to enable the simultaneous data transmission using multiple pens.
[Features of Mobile Digital Pen Gateway System]
This is a portable handwriting capture system including the mobile terminal, digital pen and special paper. The notes taken by the digital pen are transferred to the server on real time from anywhere as long as the mobile terminal communication is available.
This system is available for services using multiple digital pens at the same time to transmit data with one mobile terminal. Handwritten notes captured are not saved in the mobile terminal after its transmission is completed. For where the mobile communication is unavailable due to difficulty to receive radio waves, handwritten notes are temporarily saved in the mobile terminal for retry when the user moves to wherever accessible for mobile communication.
The data transmitted through the server may be checked using the browser function of the mobile terminal.
[Outline of Digital Pen Gateway]
Digital Pen Gateway is the access point dedicated to Anoto System (*1) digital pens. Since data is transmitted from Digital Pen Gateway including the ultra-small Linux server (L-Box) or the mobile terminal to digital pens by Bluetooth, the simultaneous wireless data transmission using multiple pens is possible. There is no requirement for a cable connection. This allows the digital pen to be carried around freely like regular pens.
[Future Scenario]
Digital Pen Gateway is expected to be used in classroom lessons and other educational areas such as clam school, in addition to its service that has been used as the questionnaire assistance system for visitors of a museum. The mobile version of Digital Pen Gateway is now expected to be more flexible in use such as allowing sales representatives to use the system outside or in a temporary shop. NTT Comware aims to provide an advanced digital pen solution as the system integration service including consulting of Digital Pen Gateway to meet the customer needs.
This system will be available with hTc Z, NTT Docomo smart phone in December 2007, in addition to FOMA M1000 which is currently used.
[Terminology]
    *1: Anoto System
A user interface technology developed by Anoto Group AB, Sweden (http://www.anoto.com) using the special paper and pen. This system is designed to allow users to write in comfort on ordinary paper and directly transmit handwritten notes and illustrations to an access point instead of traditional interfaces such as keyboard.
[Notice]
The mobile version of Digital Pen Gateway will be displayed in QRS Corporation/NTT Comware Tokai booth (D-11) in Nursing Care Zone at International Modern Hospital Show 2007 held at Tokyo Big Site on July 11th (Wed) – 13th, 2007.
