NTT Comware Started in Service Chillerless Module Datacenter
-- "pPUE: under1.1", for Inhouse Cloud Services --

NTT Comware Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shinobu Umino; here in after, NTT Comware) starts in service the "Chillerless Module Datacenter" with the world-class standard*1 of partial Power Usage Efficiencies "pPUE*2: under1.1" for further cost reduction and as Green ICT solutions in November 2012. The Service starts to provide inhouse cloud computing, and for commercial use for the customer will be following.

Background
For a broader use of ICT solutions and rapid increase of needs for cloud computing as well as for corporate sustainability, importance of Datacenter is increasing much higher as a social infrastructure. In addition to significant increase of electric usage because of expanding ICT resources, requiring more power for processing, further cost reduction of ICT infrastructure and energy saving are required business needs. . NTT Comware provides carrier-grade datacenter services as SmartCloud (R) Datacenter with reliability, security, managed services and energy efficiency. For further energy efficiency, evaluation and validation tests of eChillerless Module Datacenterf has been went through 1 year since November 2011 and accomplished.

Features of 'Chillerless Module Datacenter'
  1. Environmental Control
The air heated by ICT equipment is exhausted to outside of the building and intake fresh air to server hall. Using high performance ICT equipment applicable up to 40 degrees Celsius with precise air-flow, temperature and humidity control in server hall. Therefore, this datacenter reduces a significant electric power required for air conditioning, only a few watts per server. Itfs able to accommodate up to 12KVA ICT equipment per rack.
  2. Design and Operation
Chillerless datacenter has been designed to adopt Module-type systems*3 and can be expand flexibly according to its needs. This Datacenter reduces 45% cost compared with NTT Comware's existing datacenter for both initial and operation (mainly for electric facilities) costs.
  3. Usage
Inhouse cloud services, big data or high-performance computing etc.
Results of Evaluation and Validation Test for Power Saving
Throughout of 1 year evaluation and validation test (November 2011 - October 2012) it has proven the efficiency, pPUE=1.02 constantly including hot/cold season. In comparison with current SmartCloud(R) Datacenter, pPUE=1.3*4, it is equivalent to reduce 300 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year in every 1,000 servers operation.

Future Scenario
NTT Comware continues to develop technologies of energy efficiency and improve operations methodology for Chillerless Module Datacenter, as well as applying these technologies to following Datacenters.

Terminology
*1. According to NTT Comware's studies (as of the dates released)
*2. PUE: Power Usage Effectiveness. A measure of datacenter efficiency proposed by the Green Grid. PUE is the ratio of total amount of energy usage by the energy delivered to computing equipment, and ideal PUE is 1.0. PUE=(The total power consumption in a data center/power consumption of computing equipment in the Datacenter) PUE is calculated for entire datacenter building and pPUE is calculated for datacenter section/floor.
*3. A system including facilities, electric utilities, air conditioning units and ICT equipment designed/configured as component
*4. pPUE=1.3: achieved at Tokyo Datacenter with chiller units. pPUE=1.3 is the one of the most efficient datacenters with chillers.
