Successful Demonstration of New Immersive Live Viewing Technology Using IOWN and AI
Simultaneous Remote 3D and AR Streaming of Sports Games and Music Events in Real-Time

NTT DOCOMO SOLUTIONS, Inc. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Tetsuya Mikajiri, hereinafter, NTT DOCOMO SOLUTIONS) successfully demonstrated a new immersive live viewing technology using IOWN*1 APN*2 and AI in February 2026. This technology makes it possible to simultaneously stream immersive 3D images and AR images live in real time to different locations. For instance, using AI to instantaneously process data, including analysis of video and images of entertainment events such as sports games and artist performances, will enable people to go in a broad range of new artistic directions. This will enable new entertainment experiences that transcend physical distance and venue restrictions, enabling viewers of live 3D video to enjoy live performance as if they were actually there, or to enjoy their preferred viewing angle using AR video displayed on the viewers' mobile devices. It will also enable event operators and facility owners to diversify their artistic directions and the video they are able to stream, improving the value of events and venues.

New Live Viewing Experiences (Left: 3D viewing experience, Right: AR to focus on your favorite player)

This demonstration of a new immersive live viewing technology utilized IOWN APN and AI, characterized by extremely low power consumption, high speed, large capacity, and low latency transmission. A video was shot at the Shinagawa headquarters building to simulate a stadium site and sent to a data center in Tokyo connected by IOWN APN. The video was analyzed and processed by AI in real time, and then simultaneously delivered to computers and mobile devices in the Shinagawa headquarters building as a high-capacity 3D live video and an AR video, and playback on these devices was confirmed. This demonstration is a realization of a new live viewing technology that delivers videos of live sports and live music performances from venues that do not have the equipment necessary for AI processing to various locations, and adds value such as real-time image conversion and analysis via a data center equipped with GPU servers. In addition, the RDMA*3 method was used in this demonstration. In it, live 3D video data and other video data processed by AI in the data center are directly transmitted to the memory of another server, achieving faster and lower latency delivery.

Features of the immersive entertainment technology powered by AI & IOWN

Since 2021, NTT DOCOMO SOLUTIONS has been working on a demonstration of CPS*4 solutions and sports experiences that utilize XR with IOWN, and accumulating know-how regarding transmission methods such as IOWN APN control, AI video and image analysis, and remote GPU technologies. Going forward, the DOCOMO Group will collaborate with business partners in the entertainment business, including Venue Business, seeking to expand the possibilities of future entertainment experiences that more people can enjoy anytime and anywhere using their own devices.

From March 2 to March 5, 2026,
NTT DOCOMO SOLUTIONS will exhibit Immersive Entertainment Powered by AI & IOWN at the NTT Group booth at MWC 26 in Barcelona, Spain.

*1 IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network)
IOWN is a concept for network and information processing infrastructure, including terminals, that leverages innovative, optical-centric technologies to enable ultra-high-speed, high-capacity communications and massive computing resources, while optimizing both individual and overall systems based on diverse data. (https://group.ntt/en/group/iown/) IOWN is a registered trademark of NTT Corporation.
*2 APN (All-Photonics Network)
APN is one of the technical elements of IOWN, it is a next-generation network technology that realizes amazingly low power consumption, high-speed, low-latency communications using optical signals instead of conventional electric signals. (https://group.ntt/en/group/iown/function/apn.html)
*3 RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access)
A technology that allows direct access to a remote server's memory to read and write data without involving the CPU during data exchanges. This enables high-speed, efficient data transfer while minimizing CPU load.
*4 CPS (Cyber Physical System)
A system that creates new value by reproducing information from physical space, such as video data, as a digital twin in cyberspace, performing analysis, prediction, and optimization tasks, and then feeding the results back into physical space.
